Here at Peace of Mind IT, we’ve seen it all, from the “oops” moments to the “we probably should’ve called you sooner” scenarios. While we're fully equipped to handle any situation, the reality is that many of these issues can be avoided altogether with a few simple best practices.
Here are five common IT missteps we see all the time, and our expert tips to help you stay ahead of them:
1. Using Weak or Reused Passwords
It’s one of the most common and risky habits we see far too often. Whether it’s a simple password, reusing the same password across multiple accounts, or continuing to use a password that hasn’t been updated for years, inadequate credentials leave your system susceptible to attacks.
Our Expert Tip: Use a password manager (like 1Password or Bitwarden), introduce strong password rules, and use multi-factor authentication when applicable
2. Skipping Software Updates
We understand how frustrating a “restart now” prompt may be, especially as it often pops up at the worst of times. However, putting off these updates means missing out on vital patches that will ensure the efficiency of your machine.
Our Expert Tip: Set updates to run automatically during off-hours, or work with your IT provider to create a patching schedule that doesn’t disrupt your team.'
3. No Real Backup Strategy
Most business are under the impression their data is secure, yet it often takes a failed server or ransomware attack to strike before the true security of their data is revealed. Simply syncing files to the cloud is not the same as having a comprehensive backup strategy.
Our Expert Tip: Implement the 3-2-1 backup rule: Keep 3 copies of your data, stored on different types of media, and make sure at least one of those copies are stored of site. Automate backups, test them regularly, and ensure efficient performance consistently.
4. Letting Everyone Be an Admin
Only give admin rights to those who truly require it. Understanding admin rights are synonymous to a master key, and not everybody should have the key to the building.
Our Expert Tip: Restrict admin access to only those who absolutely need it.
5. Ignoring Employee IT Training
Nowadays, most tech issues are a result of humans. Falling for phishing emails, fake login pages, and downloading unclear attachments. However, if employees are not trained properly, how can we expect them to know better?
Our Expert Tip: Engage in IT awareness training a few times a year. Keep it simple. Make it relevant.
